High pressure applications

Every compressed air application needs certain pressure for normal operation and for easier classification of the compressors and the equipment for air treatment some non-written rules regarding pressure ranges were determined.

Pressure up to 25 bar is normally considered as “low pressure”. Pressure from 25 bar to 50 bar is considered as “medium pressure” while everything above is considered as “high pressure”.

PARTICLE CONCENTRATION
During compression concentration of solid particles increases significantly. For example, if we have a constant volume and if we increase the pressure from ambient to 7 bar overpressure the concentration of solid particles will increase 8 times. This is already a huge increase of solid particles but still almost nothing compared to concentration increase to 400bar overpressure where solid particle concentration is 401 times higher than the concentration at the ambient pressure.

WATER VAPOR CONTENT AT HIGH PRESSURE
We already mentioned that compression will increase concentration of solid particles but it will not affect maximum water content which is determined just by the air temperature. If we compress the air with 100 % relative humidity at 35 °C to 7 barg approximatelly 0,3 l of water will be condensed during filling of 1 m3 reservoar at constant temperature. Amount of condensed water will increase to 15.6 l when filling the same reservoar to 400 bar at constant temperature. From this we see, that at high pressure applications significantly more water is condensed and needs to be removed from the system. 

But if we have 100 % relative humidity at 1 bar overpressure and if we reduce the pressure to ambient the same amount of water molecules will be distributed across 2 times bigger volume which will result in 50 % relative humidity and accordingly lower dew point.

CYCLONE SEPARATORS

Operation of cyclonic separator is based on centrifugal force which causes aerosols to collide into the housing wall and water droplets then drip to the bottom of the housing where the condensate can be drained. Essential part of the water separator is a plate on the bottom side, that prevents already separated condensate to re-enter the air stream in the system. The place beneath the plate where is no turbulence is known as “dead zone” or “quiet zone”. Properly dimensioned cyclone separator can easily achieve 98 % efficiency with less than 10 mbar of pressure drop and is one of the most efficient products for removal of already liquefied water from the system.
