How to save energy with a hybrid dryer? - Good practice example

With its COM-DRY series of hybrid dryers, Omega Air offers more than just a product to its customers: the flexibility to adapt precisely when and how they want to produce their compressed air, depending on the season and/or application.

Several customers contacted us to find a solution to a specific problem: How to dry process air without having to install costly equipment and oversized compressors?

We proposed our COM-DRY series, and after talking with customers about their applications and how/where/when they would use compressed air, we realized that we could upgrade our already tailor made hybrid dryers with some adjustments, reducing their electrical consumption bill significantly at the end of the year!

Basically, it looked like this: some of these customers would need an adsorption dryer to eliminate condensation and frost because their process piping would be exposed to low temperatures outside, and some others would have different applications that would require a pressure dew point between +3 °C and - 40 °C.

That's why we came up with a COM-DRY hybrid dryer, which is equipped with several bypasses and an additional control box. This solution enables the dryer to automatically switch from a hybrid solution (refrigeration + adsorption dryer) to a refrigerated solution in no time.

Thus, customers with equipment and pipelines exposed to low temperatures outside would use the hybrid dryer in the winter, and the refrigeration dryer only during the rest of the time, and customers with multiple applications would be able to switch modes whenever needed.

To summarize, this flexible COM-DRY solution provides our customers with significant savings throughout the year, for many reasons:

• The starting price itself is lower compared to a heat regenerated dryer.

• The installation of a dew point dependent controller that regulates, in real time, the purge air consumption, according to the pressure dew point read at the outlet of the dryer. In this way, the dryer is constantly in its ''ECO mode'' and adjusts its consumption automatically.

• The inlet air is pre-dried, down to a pressure dew point of +3 °C thanks to the energy-efficient RDP dryer. In this way, the adsorption dryer is less overloaded, and under nominal conditions, consumes an average of 10 to 15% less energy than a stand-alone unit.

• This flexibility, made possible by our special by-pass and control box, allows our customers to adjust the dryer's air consumption to their application, thereby optimizing energy consumption.
