Compressed hydrogen purifiers H2-PURE

H2-PURE purifiers are designed for continuous separation of water vapour, oxygen and solid particles from hydrogen gas, making them eligible to all applications possible, including Fuel Cells (ISO 14687:2019). The unit is designed for fully automatic operation.

H2 PURE
Hydrogen is increasingly recognised as one of the key pillars of the energy transition, as it enables the decarbonisation of sectors where electrification is not the optimal solution.
It is a vector for renewable energy storage, alongside batteries, and transport, ensuring back up for seasonal variations and connecting production locations to more distant demand centres. Despite its advantages, its practical application depends directly on gas quality, as impurities in hydrogen present serious risks to the safe operation of fuel cells and other applications.

Hydrogen production through electrolysis or other methods (e.g. steam reforming, biomass gasification) generates by-products such as oxygen, moisture, and other gases.

The presence of these impurities may lead to:
reduced efficiency of fuel cells,
corrosion and mechanical damage,
safety risks during storage and transportation.

Without proper purification and conditioning, hydrogen cannot be used in sensitive applications, like using it with fuel cell applications.

The drying operation is based on adsorption. Drying of the gas takes place under pressure inside two pressure columns filled with adsorbent material. Drying phase is followed by column swithcover after saturation of the adsorbent.
The H2-DRY operates alternatly over three main phases of the process (adsorption, heating, cooling).

The type of regeneration is heat regenerated. Depending on the existence and type of available fluids to conduct this regeneration/cooling, we then adapt the components of the hydrogen dryer, to ensure that a strict minimum of gas will be lost (1-2% maximum when external dry gas is available for regeneration/cooling for instance).

OMEGA AIR hydrogen purifiers use temperature swing adsorption (TSA) technology.
TSA technology is a hydrogen purification method that is using temperature-dependent adsorption characteristics of gas molecules on solid adsorbents.

HP-PURE purifiers have a built-in DeOxo unit - a tower filled with a special adsorbent called catalyst. DeOxo unit reduces oxygen content down to <5 ppm or lower.
The purification process uses DEOXO reaction to remove oxygen from the gas stream. This reaction catalyzes the combination of hydrogen and oxygen to form water, which is then condensed on the heat exchanger.

A proven and robust design enables efficient and reliable operation, fast installation and simple maintenance. The Purification Unit is suitable for easy integration in the electrolyser hydrogen package. Version “P” consumes up to 2 % of hydrogen for regeneration while version “X” performs regeneration in a closed loop meaning zero hydrogen is wasted during regeneration. Both versions are available with an optional deoxo unit that reduces oxygen content down to <5 ppm or lower.
